About Andy Chen

Jiuzhou (Andy) Chen, a senior at Deerfield Academy in the United States, is a dedicated pre- college student at the New England Conservatory of Music. Under the guidance of esteemed instructors such as Dr. Jonathan Bass and Yumei Wei, Andy excels as a piano soloist, chamber musician, and composer. Having developed his musical talent since the age of five, he specializes in piano performance.

Andy has achieved numerous accolades from prestigious competitions, including the International Music Competition Salzburg “Grand Prize Virtuoso,” the Steinway National Piano Competition, the Seattle International Piano Festival & Competition, First Place in the 2023 Classical Viennese Festival International, top performer and first place San Francisco Innovative International Music Competition ;Silver Medal in the 5th WPTA Finland IPC Category G 2023, Platinum Prize in the World Master Open Music Competition 2024, and First Place in the 2024 Charleston International Music Competition. His exceptional performances have earned critical acclaim for his “rich sound and excellent rhythmic drive,” solidifying his reputation as a remarkable talent.
 

In addition to solo performances, Andy actively participates in chamber music. He has been a member of Junior Chamber Music for six years and has contributed to Deerfield Academy's Chamber Music program for two years. His musical journey has taken him to cities like Vienna, Prague, and Budapest, where he has showcased his talent while supporting charitable causes benefiting local communities. Andy has also collaborated with esteemed ensembles such as the Shekinah Chamber Ensemble and the “Celebration of Young Talent” orchestra.

Andy is also a passionate composer. He has studied harmony and counterpoint using Walter Piston’s exercises and has composed music for school events, including a symphony for Deerfield Academy's orchestra, which will be performed during Family Weekend. His dedication to sharing music extends to performing at senior centers, churches, and teaching music to children with autism, giving them opportunities to perform on stage with him. 

Outside of music, Andy is a dedicated competitor in the Math Olympiad and an avid tennis player, reflecting his commitment to excellence both on and off the stage.
